After the founding of New China, Ji Chaozhu followed the footsteps of his father and brother and resolutely gave up his studies at Harvard University in the United States, overcoming difficulties and returning to the motherland. Joined the China New Democratic Youth League at Tsinghua University in May 1951. After joining the People ’s Volunteer Army, he performed well in the Kaesong negotiations and was commended by China and the DPRK.

　　After the victory of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Ji Chaozhu returned to Beijing and was assigned to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He joined the Communist Party of China in March 1956. Since 1957, Ji Chaozhu has served as Premier Zhou Enlai's English translator. He has been in this position for 17 years.

Two years later, he was appointed as the 7th Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of China to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (after Hu Dingyi). Ji Chaozhu's work during his tenure as an ambassador in the UK was well received by all parties.

　　On January 29, 1991, UN Secretary General Perez de Cuellar announced the appointment of Ji Chaozhu as UN Deputy Secretary General. On February 6, the British General Electric Company announced: the establishment of a scholarship named after the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom Ji Chaozhu. From 1991 to 1993, 10 managers were trained for China each year.
