01 May 2020 For the first time a May Day without squares, marked by the Covid emergency. No processions, no demonstrations for the 2020 edition, the pandemic forced the cancellation of the national holiday that for this year CGIL, CISL and UIL had chosen to do in the city of Padua, 'European Capital of Volunteering'. "Work in safety: to build the future" is the slogan chosen by the unions which, in forms other than traditional ones, therefore celebrate the workers' day. Speeches and messages are entrusted to TV and social networks, a virtual marketplace that, on the eve of Phase 2, focuses more than ever on the priorities of work and safety to start again. "It will be the work that will fight and defeat this virus," says CGIL secretary general Maurizio Landini in the video message posted on social media. "All together we first of all put the priority of work to restart the country, of a safe job for all men and women", underlines the leader of the CISL, Annamaria Furlan, in her video message. "On May 1st in such a difficult condition we had never done it, but we give a message of hope and certainties," says Uil number one, Carmelo Barbagallo.

Tonight on TV an extraordinary edition of the traditional concert in Piazza San Giovanni in Rome.

Landini: "Work and safety for a new development"
"It is under everyone's eyes the work that people are doing. It is useful to remember on May 1st the decisive contribution that the world of work in all its forms is making to defeat the virus and put all of us in a position to look ahead. There is a need to give an indication of trust. " Thus the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, in connection with Unomattina on Rai 1. "It is not a partisan slogan, only for the workers, it is building ground for a new development model", underlines Landini. "Today is the time to protect all forms of work, not to leave anyone alone, not to lay off workers, not to shut down businesses and to think now about how we rebuild and relaunch our country", says Landini, stressing the centrality of work and that "the person, social justice, not the market must return to the center with the profit itself"

Furlan:
"We need a social pact to start again" "We must make the country safe, in health and economic security". So we need "a great social pact, which gives clear objectives to the country and tools to achieve them. We need to rethink a model of growth and development". So the secretary general of the CISL, Annamaria Furlan, at Unomattina on Rai 1. A social pact "means putting work and people at the center and therefore giving priority to investments that create work and social cohesion".

Barbagallo: "Commitment to work in safety and revitalization of the economy"
"More than being a party today, it is a May 1st of commitment to work in safety and to rebuild our future". This was stated by the secretary general of Uil Carmelo Barbagallo on Rai 1. "I also think that Europe is beginning to understand that austerity, the fiscal compact, the old-fashioned Mes are useless. We need to make investments in safety, in infrastructure, in innovation and research and digitization. We discovered that we are behind on everything, "he adds. The UIL leader hopes for "a pact for the country and a pact for Europe, a pact between businesses and workers that will allow us to recover the economy". "We must all get together and relaunch our economy in security," he concludes.
