In the United States, in the face of the economic disaster brought about by the precautionary measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, many governors are gradually lifting compulsory confinement. This is particularly the case for the governor of Ohio. But the latter is distinguished by a particularly cautious approach. Portrait of this Republican like no other.

From our correspondent in Washington,

His approach to the health crisis contrasts sharply with that of his Republican peers. Mike DeWine was the first governor in the country to shut down schools in his state. It was March 12, the day before the president declared a state of emergency .

The Ohio governor also postponed the elections, which were to be held five days later. And then worked to promote postal voting, while Donald Trump condemned the practice.

Mike DeWine consults with scientists, organizes the distribution of masks in the prisons of his state, and very gradually lifts the confinement measures. Ohioans are always asked to stay at home, only a few businesses will be able to reopen at the start of the week.

Thanks to his measured positions, the Republican governor achieved a feat in a divided America: he received the compliments supported by great democratic figures of his state. And its popularity rating has skyrocketed. 89% of its citizens say they trust it in its management of the epidemic.

In the United States, the balance sheet of the pandemic continues to worsen. Already more than 62,000 Americans have died from contracting the coronavirus. Thirty states are easing their measures as of this Friday.
