“In May 1945, when you met with Russian soldiers on the Elbe, I was a ten-year-old boy. After fleeing from the east, we ended up in a Mecklenburg village in northern Germany, where we were sheltered in the house of one dead aunt, ”wrote Tessman.

According to him, the front line was approaching every day and due to Nazi propaganda he believed that they would be brutally dealt with.

“But everything happened differently. My older brother pulled me out of my shelter behind the hedgerow and said: “Russians are at our place. They won’t do anything to us. You can come in, ”Tessman said.

He noted that during the first meeting he learned about the existence of what is called the “Russian soul”.

“By participating in the war against Nazi Germany from Omaha Beach to Elba, you risked your life and defeated National Socialist Fascism and made the world a better place.” For this, we should all be grateful to you. Then good conquered evil, ”wrote Tessman.

As the author of the letter added, today the world is not divided into good and bad, but consists of different cultures, which must be respected.
