April 29, 2020 "People think Sweden has done nothing, it couldn't be more false", said the head of the World Health Organization's Health Emergency Program, Mike Ryan, at a press conference. "Sweden has put in place very strong public health measures. What they have done differently is that they have been based on a relationship of trust with citizenship."

According to Ryan, the Swedes have gone directly to the phase of coexistence with the virus: "If we have to arrive at a new way of life by returning to society without new lockdowns, I think Sweden can be an example to follow". In short, in Sweden "they are understanding how to live with the virus in real time, their model is a strong control strategy and a strong community trust and collaboration. We will see if it will be a successful model or not".

Compared to the rest of the world, far from having set a lax approach, Sweden has applied "a strong public health strategy, focusing on hygiene measures, of distance, protecting people in care homes". The crucial point "was the relationship with the population, which had a strong desire 'to adhere to physical distancing and to regulate itself. In addition, the health system has always remained at the right level of emergency response capacity" added Bryan. For Bryan, if you want to avoid more lockdowns, the way forward is to learn to live with Covid-19. "We have to adapt to relationships modulated by the presence of the virus, we need to know that there is, in the family, in the community and this could change the way we live".
