Gilles Simeoni is President of Corsica - BLONDET-POOL / SIPA

"The tourism sector in Corsica is already in a very serious situation, and it risks becoming cataclysmic" because of the health crisis, was alarmed Wednesday the nationalist president of the executive council of the island Gilles Simeoni.

Tourism "represents 30%" of the gross domestic product of the island, "much more than the French average", according to Gilles Simeoni, who fears "a gaping hole in the Corsican economy with consequences at the social level".

Significant state aid

The island leader met for almost two hours with the Secretary of State to the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs responsible for these files, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, who fears an "economic shock" and promises "Support and support" to the tourism sector.

Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne clarified that "49 million (euros) of loans guaranteed by the State have already been validated for 380 island tourist businesses", and that an additional 12 million euros would be released for a hundred other businesses in the next few days.

Given the specificity of the Corsican economic fabric, a new meeting is scheduled between the two officials at the end of May: "We will see where we are to try to build, as much as possible, a tourist offer for the coming season, even if we already know that this will be extremely difficult, ”explained Gilles Simeoni.
