As noted, the decision was made "in connection with a public insult to the memory of Archpriest Alexander Ageykin, despite the grief of his wife and children, on the day of his death, which aroused the indignation of the bishops, clergy and laity of the Russian Orthodox Church."

The decree says that the patriarch has repeatedly received complaints about the statements of Kuraev.

Ageikin died on April 21 at the age of 48. He had previously been diagnosed with a coronavirus infection.

Kuraev dedicated his blog post to his death, calling the archpriest "underprotected presbyter" and "stupid careerist."
