Total working hours in the world will decrease by 10% or more ILO forecast April 29 23:41

With the spread of the new coronavirus spread worldwide, the UN specialized agency announced that total working hours in the second quarter will fall by more than 10% compared to six months ago.

The ILO = International Labor Organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, announced today a forecast for total working hours worldwide.

As a result, due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, the second quarter of April to June is expected to decrease by 10.5% compared to October to December last year before the infection spread. That is the same calculation as 305 million people lost their jobs.

The ILO announced on July 7 that it would reduce 6.7% of total working hours in the same second quarter, but it has significantly revised the forecast as countries continue to curb restrictions.

By region, the working hours are expected to decline by 12.4% in the Americas, 11.8% in Europe and Central Asia, and 10% in the Asia-Pacific region.

ILO Secretary-General Rider says, “For many workers, lack of income means losing all food, safety and the future. We have to save them now.” We urged each country to take targeted measures immediately.
