In recent days, protests have spread to several cities in Lebanon. The economic crisis has worsened under the strict restrictions implemented during the corona pandemic. One word that is often heard in the demonstrations is the word hunger.

"I'm hungry - should you hit me for it?" a protester shouts to the police at a clash in Beirut. "I'm hungry than you!" answers the police.

Banks on fire

It has been most violent in the city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon, where several banks have been set on fire. Social worker Linda Burghol, who runs a soup kitchen in Tripoli, tells SVT News that the needs are growing every day. Many have not been paid for over two months.

Huge popular protests against corrupt politicians took off in Lebanon last fall. Today, 45 percent of the country's population is considered poor.
