European countries granted asylum last year to a total of 295,800 people applying for international protection, according to data released by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

According to a report by the Spanish newspaper "ABC", the Syrians, Afghans and Venezuelans were at the forefront of asylum seekers and other forms of international protection in the European Union, according to Eurostat data published on Monday.

78,600 Syrians received European protection (27% of the total), followed by Afghans (40,000 or 14% of the total), and Venezuelans (37,500, or 13% of the total).

Germany was the largest European country in terms of the number of who granted them international protection last year, which amounted to 116,200 people, which represents 39% of the total, followed by France, which granted protection to 42,100 people (14% of the total), and Spain was the third country where it accepted most Applications received (13% of the total).

European Union countries received three hundred thousand requests, which is 6% less compared to 2018, and only 48% of them obtained refugee status, while 28% received temporary protection and 25% received protection for humanitarian reasons.

In the case of asylum seekers from Venezuela, the number of refugees who received protection from a European Union increased by 40% compared to the previous year, according to Eurostat, who indicated that in 2018, a thousand Venezuelans applied for asylum in Europe.
