A case of twists and turns that kept the peaceful Nordic country in suspense. A wealthy businessman, whose wife mysteriously disappeared 18 months ago, was arrested by Norwegian police on Tuesday.

On October 31, 2018, Anne-Elisabeth Hagen, a 68-year-old housewife, had disappeared from her home in Lørenskog, east of Oslo, without leaving a trace.

A murder made up in kidnapping?

A request for ransom in cryptocurrency accompanied by threats found on the spot and sporadic contacts on a digital platform with alleged kidnappers had first accredited the thesis of a villainous kidnapping. But, in June 2019, the police had changed their theory, now considering that it was probably a murder masked kidnapping.

On Tuesday, she arrested her husband, Tom Hagen, 70, when he left his home. The businessman, 164th biggest fortune in Norway according to Kapital magazine , is officially suspected of "murder or complicity in murder," said Commissioner Ida Melbo Øystese at a press conference.

The body still not found

The police did not provide concrete evidence to support their suspicion or reason, but spoke of "a deliberate will to muddy the waters".

Gray areas remain on the exact role of Tom Hagen, the location of the body of his wife officially considered to be probably dead, or even possible accomplices. The suspect has still not been heard by investigators.
