The Argentine Football Federation (AFA) will end the 2019-2020 season, which has been interrupted since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic, its president Claudio Tapia announced on Monday.

"We are going to close the championship so that we can designate the teams qualified for continental competitions next year," said Tapia in an interview with TNT.

The AFA also announced the suspension of relegations for this season and next season.

Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, a club coached by Diego Maradona, 19th out of 24 at the time of the interruption, is therefore guaranteed to remain in the first division.

Claudio Tapia justified these measures by the need to alleviate the economic difficulties suffered by the clubs, which are non-profit associations in Argentina.

The containment measures in the country, decreed on March 20, must continue at least until May 10.
