Robert Herbin, emblematic coach of the great era of AS Saint-Etienne, has died at the age of 81, announced Monday AFP Roland Romeyer, president of the club from Stéphane.
Player then technician of the Greens, the one who had won the nickname "Sphinx" presented the most beautiful prize list of French football where only missed the European Cup, for lack of having won on the bench of Greens the famous final of 1976 of " square posts ".
"Hospitalized for several days, he died on April 27 (...) dropped by his heart," reported the regional newspaper Le Progrès on its website.
Robert Herbin had been hospitalized since last Tuesday at the CHU de Saint-Étienne for serious heart and lung failure, unrelated to the epidemic of new coronavirus.
He will have led the Stéphanoise team for 14 seasons, from 1972 to 1983 then from 1987 to 1990. The Greens notably owe him the famous epic in European Cup of champion clubs in 1976, ended on a defeat in the final against Bayern Munich in Glasgow.
Herbin presents the biggest prize list in French football, acquired only under the colors of ASSE where he arrived in the summer of 1957 from the Cavigal in Nice. He was nine times French champion, five times as a player and four as a coach, and six times winner of the French Cup, three in each role.
Midfielder then defender, he was international with the Blues (23 selections), participating in particular in the World Cup in 1966 in England.
Robert Herbin has also coached, with less success, Lyon (1983-1985), Al Nasr Ryad (Saudi Arabia, 1985-1986), Strasbourg (1986-1987) and the Red Star (1991-1995).
