Airbnb unveiled on Monday a new protocol for cleaning and disinfecting the accommodation listed on its platform in the hope of reassuring its customers and resuming reservations, which have been brought to a halt with the coronavirus pandemic.

This initiative, which is to be launched in May, provides for the certification of hosts who have completed training on the new hygiene rules, developed on the basis of recommendations from the American health authorities and health experts.

"As governments manage the health crisis and have begun to explore restrictions to put in place before re-authorizing travel, we are actively preparing for Airbnb to support our community and prepare for the future of tourism, focusing on health and prevention, "the company said in a statement.

Airbnb plans that members offering accommodation receive "specific information on Covid-19 prevention, such as the use of personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves for guests or those who do the cleaning, as well only disinfectants approved by regulatory authorities ", details Airbnb.

They will also be recommended to wait 24 hours between each client.

Hosts who cannot adhere to the protocol or receive certification may opt for a 72-hour vacation period between each client.

The latter will be able to clearly identify whether their host has received a certification, waits 72 hours between each occupant or chooses not to adhere to the new protocol.

Airbnb, one of the pioneers of the sharing economy, raised $ 1 billion in early April to prepare for the post-crisis.

The company also released $ 250 million at the end of March to mitigate the financial losses of hosts who rented their accommodation through its platform and who were faced with a wave of cancellations.

"Although we can never completely eliminate the risks of travel and science is constantly evolving, this initiative (on the new hygiene rules) is designed to support and protect our partners," said the company.
