A 29-year-old man was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, including one year suspended probation, by the correctional court of Béziers (Hérault), for homicide and aggravated unintentional injuries. On May 6, 2019, he had driven a cart that did not require a driver's license. However, he did not hold any compulsory insurance or road safety certificate (BSR) for this type of vehicle.

He was under the influence of narcotics (cocaine and cannabis) and drunk driving (with 1.18 grams of alcohol per liter of blood). The vehicle had also been unleashed and an accident expert had estimated the speed at 72 km / h on a stretch of road limited to 50 km / h, located in the town of Caux, in Hérault.

Loss of control and barrels

In a turn, he had lost control of the vehicle which had come to a stop on the side of the road after several rollovers. Inside the vehicle were three other adults and a 3-year-old child, when it was intended for two people maximum. His partner, located in the trunk, had been ejected and had died from his injuries. A second passenger had benefited from 15 days of ITT. The child was unharmed.

The driver was placed in pre-trial detention on May 12, 2019, after his indictment. "According to studies conducted in particular by the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction, alcohol consumption and drug use multiply the risk of fatal accident by fourteen", recalls Raphaël Balland, the public prosecutor of Béziers .

Besides the prison sentence, the court prohibited him from passing the driver's license for 3 years.
