  • Covid-19 China fears another Wuhan in the border town of Harbin

On January 6 something very curious happened between two countries, China and Vietnam. The first featured news of a rare pneumonia that had left 60 infected in Wuhan City. Meanwhile, in the Southeast Asian nation, a group of hackers is trying to steal information from the email accounts of employees of the Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management. There were still two weeks for the Asian giant to report that the new virus could be transmitted between humans.

During the following days, the computer attacks continued. Chinese workers at the agency responsible for curbing the coronavirus received several suspicious emails with malicious software attached. If they opened it, hackers could access all the information that was circulating from their computers.

This is what an investigation of the American cybersecurity company FireEye has revealed this week. They have even revealed the name of the alleged responsible hackers: APT32, a cyber espionage group that has been attacking private entities and foreign governments since 2012.

From FireEye they have pointed out that this group operates on behalf of the government of Vietnam and that they were looking for information about the coronavirus to learn how to fight it. What they have not been able to find out is whether or not they achieved their purpose. And, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, they have totally denied the link of their government with these attacks.

In these months, the news that was shared from Vietnam, both in the media and on social networks, was quite disparate. Machines that distributed free rice to the poorest citizens; coronavirus burgers in Hanoi to combat fear of pandemic; a catchy and viral choreography that teaches you how to wash your hands well; solidarity from a developing country that sends 550,000 masks to Europ a, including 110,000 to Spain ...

But the truth is that Vietnam has been one of the few countries that anticipated the coronavirus. On February 1 it had already closed its borders. Unlike other richer (and free) nations that have served as an example these days (South Korea, Taiwan or New Zealand), this country of 95 million inhabitants has a poor health infrastructure and eight doctors for every 100,000 inhabitants. . Still, and despite sharing a border of more than 1,100 kilometers with China, so far they have only had 268 people infected and there have been no deaths.

Like many other countries, containment measures were applied in Vietnam. Schools and universities closed. Since February, any citizen who entered the country had to spend a 14-day quarantine. Also, in the absence of technology and applications to monitor the pandemic, the Communist Party military undertook to track down and isolate all the people who had been in contact with those infected. Although due to their lack of tests, they have not been able to test the coronavirus for more than 180,000 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) has repeatedly praised the speed with which Vietnam acted to prevent the virus from spreading.

After a week without reporting any new cases, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc's government yesterday ordered the restrictive measures in the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh be removed. In addition, another 59 provinces have been labeled as low risk, which means that many companies and businesses, so far closed, can now reopen their doors.
