The president of the Community of Madrid has defended that its Executive reacted to the coronavirus "in a way that helped to wake up Spain . " This is the message that Isabel Díaz Ayuso has transmitted in the first control session to the Government in the regional Assembly after the interruption of parliamentary activity due to the Covid-19 crisis.

When asked by opposition groups, the popular leader has acknowledged that more than 10,000 people have died in the region due to "a pandemic that is worldwide": "I am not proud, I am sorry, you cannot imagine what I will carry with me lifetime".

"I wish I had acted before, and it's something I think about every day, but I could also have acted a week later and then Spain would have woken up a week later," Díaz Ayuso said. Madrid decreed the closure of schools, senior day centers and non-essential commercial activity before the state of alarm was decreed at the national level.

In addition, the regional president has assured that it has cost him "health" to open the field hospital of Ifema , which he says has "amazed the world". He has also ensured that all members of his Government "have left their skin", including the Minister of Social Policies, Alberto Reyero, whom he has publicly endorsed for the first time after internal tensions in recent weeks, and who have felt very "alone" due to the lack of help from the central executive.

Security measures

The Assembly of Madrid has resumed this Friday in person the control session to the Government that tried to be held on Thursday by telematic means and that had to be interrupted due to technical problems. The deputies have only been able to access the building through the garage, where they have been given gloves and a mask that they are recommended to use in all areas except the plenary hall, where the seats have been disinfected and a social distance will be maintained two meters.

Only the members of the Executive of Díaz Ayuso and the parliamentarians of the parties that ask the questions have attended the Vallecas Chamber. Their lordships have also been advised not to use the elevators and to go up the stairs . The access doors are open to prevent tampering, and there are hydro-alcoholic gels and disposable tissues in hallways and bathrooms.
