Corruption - and the fight against it - was one of the issues that Jair Bolsonaro pushed hardest in his 2018 presidential campaign. Therefore, the departure of Sérgio Moro is considered a tough blow to the government.

It was at a press conference on Friday that Sérgio Moro announced that he is resigning because the government has kicked police chief Maurício Valeixo. No explanation for the police chief's dismissal has yet been given.

"I have to protect my aftermath and, above all, my commitment, that we should stand firm against corruption, organized crime and violent crime," Sérgio Moro said at the press conference according to The Guardian.

Kicked Minister last week

Recently, the relationship between the president and Minister of Justice Sérgio Moro, who appointed Maurício Valeixo, has been tense, especially since the president began to think about making changes to the leadership of the federal police.

Last week, Jair Bolsonaro kicked his health minister Luíz Henrique Mandetta after a conflict over how the corona pandemic should be handled.
