"The world needs to develop and produce vaccines, treatments and safe and effective diagnostics against (Covid-19), and distribute them fairly," Guterres said during the video conference, to launch the initiative. Earlier, a spokesman for the American mission in Geneva told Reuters that the United States would not participate in launching the initiative.

"There will be no official US participation," he said in an email response to a query from Reuters. "We look forward to learning more about this initiative to support international cooperation to develop a vaccine for the virus as soon as possible," he added.

US President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of his country's funding for the World Health Organization. Washington is the organization's largest donor.
