Do you have to wear a mask in the metro, bus or RER or tram? This is the wish of the National Academy of Medicine but also of Valérie Pécresse. The president of the Ile-de-France region and Ile-de-France Mobilités said this Thursday evening on BFM TV. And to do this, the elected official makes a promise: to equip travelers with public masks for free.

For "that the wearing of the mask is mandatory," says Valérie Pécresse, "we must first give the masks, everyone must be able to have them." The president of the region "thinks about the methods" of collecting these masks for users, in order "to avoid crowd effects, too long queues which would be totally contrary to the spirit of the barrier measures".

Asked about the type of masks that will be offered, "surgical" or "general public", the elected official replied "a little of both", referring to further details. Valérie Pécresse also estimated that "companies also had the vocation to take over little by little", arguing that the regional measure was "punctual to restart the activity in good conditions".

The Elysée wants to smooth rush hours in public transport

The ex-LR president of the Ile-de-France regional council also pleaded for SNCF and RATP agents to "verbalize" travelers who would not wear masks, "because otherwise the efforts of 98% will be wiped out by the 2% indiscipline, ”she said. Normally, around 5 million Ile-de-France residents use public transport every day.

Thursday afternoon, after a videoconference between the Head of State and mayors, the Elysée said that the wearing of the mask would be "probably" compulsory in public transport, everywhere on the territory, after May 11. The government also wants to smooth peak hours, in coordination with businesses, and hydroalcoholic gel should be available at stations and stations.
