US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he has ordered his country's Navy to "shoot down and destroy" Iranian ships if they "harass" US vessels in the Persian Gulf.

"I have ordered the US Navy to shoot down and destroy each and every Iranian gunboat if they come to harass our ships at sea," the president tweeted.

Trump's remarks come after a week ago the Pentagon denounced that eleven Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessels - designated as a terrorist group by Washington - had approached US warships in the Persian Gulf and called the movements "dangerous" .

In response, the Islamic Republic insisted two days ago that the presence of US troops in the Persian Gulf is "illegal" and urged them to leave this region "as soon as possible".

Tension between Tehran and Washington escalated dramatically in the Persian Gulf last year with a series of attacks and sabotages between May and September targeting military and commercial ships or oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.

In addition, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, criticized on Wednesday the successful launch of the first military satellite of the Islamic Republic.

"I think Iran should be held accountable for what it has done," said the foreign minister, who said Tehran has violated a United Nations resolution that prohibits the launch of military missiles. "All nations have an obligation to assess whether Iran's launch is consistent with the resolutions of the United Nations National Council," he said.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard successfully launched the first Iranian military satellite today to improve its defensive capabilities . The elite military corps explained in a statement that Nur-1 (Light-1) was launched into orbit by two-stage launcher Qased (Messenger), also locally made, at an altitude of 425 kilometers.

The United States is highly critical of the Iranian space program, believing that behind these attempts, the Islamic Republic is concealing a project to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads and traveling long distances. Added to this is the fact that Washington declared a terrorist group a Revolutionary Guard a year ago and the armed forces of both countries have carried out several incidents in the Persian Gulf.
