Welsh Real Madrid striker Gareth Bale announced Wednesday that he has donated 500,000 pounds (569,000 euros) to the Cardiff hospital where he was born to help him fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The University Hospital of Wales holds a special place in my heart. This is where I was born and it was a great support to my friends, family and community at large, "said the 30-year-old Welsh international in a video posted on the Cardiff Health Council's Twitter account (" Cardiff and Vale UHB ").

"Me and my family, we would like to show our support. Continue to do a good job. You are doing an extraordinary job and I thank you very much," added the Welsh captain, thanking "all of the NHS (National Health Service) ", the public health system in the United Kingdom.

In Wales, 624 people died after contracting the new coronavirus and more than 8,000 cases of infection were recorded.

Spain on Wednesday recorded 435 deaths from the new coronavirus in 24 hours, a figure that increased slightly for the second consecutive day and brings the total of deaths to 21,717, according to the Spanish Ministry of Health.

While the La Liga has been suspended since March 12, the clubs expect a return to training from May 4. The Spanish Minister of Culture and Sports José Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, however, refused to confirm this date Wednesday.

The Spanish deputies were to vote in the evening to extend the state of alert and confinement until May 9, inclusive, while slightly easing certain measures.
