France and Tunisia on Wednesday submitted to the UN Security Council a draft resolution to tackle the Corona epidemic, amid divisions between major powers.

The French Press Agency quoted diplomatic sources as saying that discussions between the member states of the Security Council are expected to start soon on the draft resolution that calls, in particular, for strengthening coordination between the countries of the world to confront the epidemic, and a general and immediate cessation of hostilities in the ongoing conflicts in a number of regions of the world, including It is a 30-day truce.

The agency, which obtained the text of the three-page French-Tunisian draft resolution, also quoted a third diplomatic source as saying that a vote on it could take place early next week.

According to Russian media, the resolution in the project may be after a video conference tomorrow, Friday, between the leaders of the five permanent members of the Security Council (the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China).

The draft resolution - which was submitted by France and Tunisia - comes after negotiations that began about a month ago on two competing projects, the first submitted by the ten non-permanent members on the initiative of Tunisia, and the second initiative from France with other permanent members of the Security Council.

The negotiations seemed slow and faltering, given that Russia and China insisted that the Security Council deal with the issue of fighting the Corona epidemic, as it is only a health and economic issue.

A month ago, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a comprehensive ceasefire in the world, to provide the best conditions for tackling the Coronavirus, which has so far killed 182,000 people and infected more than 2.6 million others around the world, and asked the Security Council to support this path. .

In the context, Syria and Iran on Wednesday blocked the adoption of a Saudi draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly on tackling the Corona epidemic, while the United States and the European Union blocked a competing Russian draft resolution, according to diplomatic sources.
