Edouard Philippe will meet Wednesday afternoon by videoconference of Corsican elected officials to take stock of the coronavirus epidemic and its repercussions in one of the regions most affected by the crisis, Matignon announced on Tuesday.

This meeting, scheduled at 5 pm, will discuss “the health situation and the care of patients in Corsica”, “respect for confinement on the island”, “the methods of deconfinement”, according to Matignon. It will also be a question of “exchanging on the economic situation and the application on the territory of support measures to respond to the consequences of the crisis”, according to this source.

Are invited in particular the nationalist Gilles Simeoni, president of the executive council of Corsica, the independentist Jean-Guy Talamoni, president of the assembly of Corsica, the parliamentarians of the island or the mayors of Ajaccio and Bastia.

Take into account "the specificity of Corsica"

As part of the deconfinement strategy, Gilles Simeoni told AFP that he would plead "for taking into account the specificity of Corsica", stressing "the prevalence of tourism with the management of human flows, the 'impact on air and maritime transport' or the weight of the construction sector in the local economy which calls for specific measures.

Pointing to "the highest poverty rate in mainland France", Gilles Simeoni hopes that the executive will also reflect "on strengthening the economic and social support system", "even if it is not a question of straining the bowl " Finally, he awaits a response from the government to his request to be "a pilot territory" to experiment with the treatment based on hydroxychloroquine tested by Professor Didier Raoult in Marseille.

The independence party Corsical Libera, to which Jean-Guy Talamoni belongs, had for its part considered "very largely insufficient for Corsican companies" the "measures taken by the State" and had called for a "fiscal white year" for the financial year 2020 or the cancellation of social and tax charges including VAT "for the months of February to June 2020".
