“ Germany keeps its promises. We are making a gesture in favor of greater solidarity in Europe. I assume that our partners will also honor their commitments as quickly as possible . Interior Minister Horst Seehofer welcomed the arrival this Saturday morning in Lower Saxony of 47 unaccompanied minor refugees.
Originally from Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea, they were in camps on the Greek islands of Samos, Lesbos and Chios. After a medical examination before their departure, they will be placed in quarantine for two weeks.
About twenty of them have parents who live in Germany and could then join them if possible. The rest will be taken care of in the Lower Saxony region. Its Minister of the Interior had visited refugee camps in Greece six months ago and had committed to welcoming unaccompanied minor refugees.
Too few minors transferred, according to NGOs
Germany wants to accommodate up to 500 children. In total, ten European countries have committed to caring for around 1,500 children. NGOs fighting for the reception of migrants denounce transfers that are far too weak in their eyes.
