Since the start of confinement, Tuesday, March 17, no less than 12.6 million checks have been carried out by the police, according to Interior Minister Christophe Castaner. They resulted in 762,106 reports.

Since the start of confinement, Tuesday March 17, 1,733 police custody have been decided for repeated violations of confinement. Heard by the Senate Law Commission, as part of his mission to control the coronavirus epidemic, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner gave this figure without however being able to specify the "very wide range of suites (judicial) given by the prosecution "to these police custody.

762,106 reports

According to other figures from the minister, 12.6 million checks have been carried out by the police and gendarmes since the start of the confinement. They resulted in 762,106 reports. "The longer the confinement lasts, the more difficult the exercise is," argued the Minister of the Interior, pointing out the risk of "loosening up" both in rural areas and in so-called difficult districts. "There is a slackening in the districts but not only", he underlined, taking the example of his election department, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

Christophe Castaner, however, raised doubts about the idea that deprived neighborhoods could be resistant to the rules of confinement. "There is a fairly high level of consciousness. I do not want to suggest that young people in the neighborhoods are more 'assholes' than the average, this is not true," said Christophe Castaner.

9 million masks by the end of April

Asked about the thorny question of masks supplied to the police, the minister said that a total of four million masks had now been distributed in the services. Nine million will be distributed by the end of April and a total of 60 million have been ordered by the Ministry of the Interior.

Faced with sharp attacks on the part of the police unions on this subject, the Minister did not close the door to an evolution of the doctrine while being very cautious. "The doctrine that I implement, can evolve. It is not the Minister of the Interior who will decide on its evolution because it is done on elements of medical analysis," said Christophe Castaner. "If the doctrine were to evolve, especially on masks for the general public, obviously we will implement it, without any mood or hesitation," he added.
