For Christophe Castaner, there is "no opposition in principle" to the installation, after deconfinement, of elected municipal councils, if there is agreement of the Scientific Council on the Covid-19.

The Minister of the Interior, who was interviewed on Thursday by the Senate epidemic monitoring mission, said he would ask the Council for its opinion on this matter and the conditions to be implemented to ensure the health security of these meetings.

Almost 9 out of 10 municipal councils already elected

Philippe Bas, LR chairman of the Senate Law Commission, who leads the monitoring mission, had just informed the minister that the senators had seized this Scientific Council. "If the high scientific council gives its agreement on the holding, after deconfinement, of the municipal councils, by indicating the sanitary conditions, I have no opposition of principle", affirmed Christophe Castaner. He noted that Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had asked that this question be studied.

Out of 35,000 municipalities, 30,000 municipal councils were elected in the first round on March 15. But with the confinement from March 17, their installation and the election of the mayor could not take place.

A second round still very uncertain

Asked about the use of electronic voting for the election of these mayors by the new municipal councils, Christophe Castaner was however very reluctant, believing that there were risks to the secrecy of the vote.

For the municipalities where a second round is necessary, the government has yet to decide, on the basis of a report which will be submitted on May 23, whether it will take place on June 21 or will be further postponed, in the fall or in 2021 .
