Antonio del Villar, driver of the Santa Sofía ambulance company that transferred patients from the Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, has died with COVID-19, as reported by the Central Independent Trade Union and Officials (CSIF), the union to which he belonged.

In a press release, CSIF regretted the death last Wednesday of this worker, who "had only two months left for retirement."

"It is unknown if the contagion occurred while working, although in principle the transfers he managed were mostly from rehabilitation and plant patients, although some of these people later tested positive for COVID-19," he added.

The union has indicated that sources from the ambulance company have assured that "recently they passed a Labor inspection, after which all the deficiencies that were found were corrected" and that the workers had gloves and masks.

However, the UGT union maintains that the company "did not present adequate personal protective equipment to contain the pandemic."

Speaking to Efe, the person in charge of medical transport at UGT, Pedro Borrás, has denounced that the "lack of protection has been paid for with a life."

Today, his colleagues have paid tribute to him both at the Gregorio Marañón where he worked and at Colmenar Viejo, where he lived.
