The coronavirus crisis could provoke social movements if the measures taken to mitigate its impact are insufficient. This is feared by the International Monetary Fund in a report released Wednesday as part of its annual spring meetings.

The IMF warns: social movements could break out in certain countries if their governments do not implement sufficient measures to mitigate the economic effects of the pandemic. These demonstrations could occur after the containment measures are lifted, if citizens feel that their government has not done everything to help them economically.

The Monetary Fund also recalls that many countries have already experienced social protests in the past two years; like Chile, Lebanon, Ecuador, Algeria, Iran, or France with the yellow vests. To avoid social conflicts, the IMF recommends that governments clearly explain to their citizens the temporary content and nature of the economic aid linked to the coronavirus crisis. The institution also calls on the international community to financially help the poorest countries and to reduce their debt.
