The new siphonophore is one of some thirty new species found recently by a research team from the Schmidt Ocean Institute off Australia's west coast.

- It was absolutely amazing to see this huge organism spread out like a rippling UFO floating in the water. We couldn't believe what we saw, "researcher Nerinda Wilson told The Guardian.

Like magnets, the siphonophore feeds on fish and crustaceans, which they paralyze and capture through tentacles hanging from the body.
