The US military said on Wednesday that 11 Iranian Revolutionary Guards ships approached a dangerous distance from US military ships in the Gulf, describing the move as "dangerous and provocative."

A statement issued by the Fifth Fleet - based in Bahrain - said that the Revolutionary Guard ships approached the US Navy ships in international waters in the northern Gulf while they were conducting exercises.

The statement emphasized that the Iranian ships approached six American military ships that were conducting operations with army helicopters in international waters.

He added that at one point, the Iranian ships approached ten yards from the US Coast Guard's "Maui" ship.

The statement stated that the American ships issued several warnings with the radio and the horns of the ships, noting that the Iranian ships returned after about an hour after the accident.

There was no immediate mention of the incident in the Iranian media, or any official Iranian comment on it.
