Josep Borrell, High Representative for European Foreign and Security Policy, mandated the European External Action Service to create a task force dedicated to supporting and facilitating the temporary exchange of information on military assistance provided by national armies to support civilian authorities in combating the emerging Corona Virus pandemic.

A statement of the European External Action Service in Brussels said that the decision is a concrete follow-up to the video conference of defense ministers of the European Union member states on April 6, and the task force includes experts from the European Union's military staff, and other services as needed.

The task force primarily provides a focal point to Member States through an online platform, to exchange requests, best practices and other relevant information in response to the virus outbreak.

The task force will also enhance strategic communication efforts on the contributions made by the armed forces of European Union member states to addressing the effects of the epidemic, and help identify lessons learned and potential impacts on security and defense policy, to enhance resiliency and preparedness for future crises in the region.

By working in the service of member states, the task force can provide support to the Emergency Response Coordination Center, as necessary, on the use of the military assets of member states in the context of civil protection in Europe. The task force will also coordinate closely with NATO, ensuring integration and mutual reinforcement and avoiding duplication.

The task force includes experts from the European Union military staff and other services.
