The measures adopted by Germany to fight the coronavirus pandemic were initially necessary until April 19. At the end of their meeting on Wednesday April 15, Chancellor Angela Merkel and regional bosses have chosen to be cautious. The current restrictions - no gathering of more than two people outside, school closings, etc. - have been extended. However, an easing is planned for the retail trade.

From our correspondent in Berlin,

The fear of politicians is too rapid and too much relaxation of the current restrictions, which would call into question Germany's good results in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. It is for this reason that, this Wednesday, April 15, it was decided that the current measures are extended for two more weeks compared to the first date announced for the start of deconfinement. The country will therefore still idle until May 3 inclusive.

"Human lives are at stake"

Our health system has so far been able to function normally. But it remains a fragile success. That is why we do not want to lift the current restrictive measures too quickly. We must exercise extreme caution because human lives are at stake, ”said Chancellor Angela Merkel, who met with the leaders of the 16 Länder.

The only easing is planned: stores with an area of less than 800m² may reopen from Monday, April 20, taking the necessary precautions. A measure criticized by the Federation of retail trade, which would have liked a global standardization. Car dealerships, bicycle dealers and bookstores will be able to reopen next week, regardless of their size.

Wearing a mask recommended but not imposed

From May 4, schools will be able to reopen in stages. This will first apply to older students and those who have exams to pass. Large events, such as football matches with the public, fairs and other large concerts are prohibited until August 31 at least.

A new meeting between Angela Merkel and the regional bosses is to take place at the end of the month. This will be an opportunity to take a fresh look and decide on the measures to be taken for other sectors such as gastronomy and the hotel industry. The authorities also plead for wearing a mask in public transport and for shopping, without imposing it.
