The deputies of the State Duma in the third, final reading adopted a bill amending articles of the Federal Law “On Days of Military Glory and Memorable Dates of Russia”.

Thus, a new day of military glory on September 3, the Day of the end of World War II in 1945, is being introduced into the Russian Federation, while the memorial date of September 2, which was in force before, is being canceled.

The explanatory note states that the document was prepared "to strengthen the historical foundations and patriotic traditions, preserve historical justice in relation to the victors in the Second World War, perpetuate a worthy memory of those who died in the defense of the Fatherland."

As the authors of the initiative indicate - the head of the Duma defense committee Vladimir Shamanov, deputy Georgy Karlov and senators Grigory Karasin and Mikhail Kozlov - September 3 was the day of nationwide celebration even during the Soviet Union, according to the decree adopted by the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Council on declaring Victory Day 3 September Japan, and more than 1.8 million people were awarded medals "For the victory over Japan", on the reverse side of which the date "September 3, 1945" is indicated.

“The wording“ September 3 - The Day of the End of World War II (1945) ”symbolizes the transition from a state of war to peace, a search for ways of reconciliation and cooperation,” the document says.

In addition, it is noted that September 3 marks the day of the end of World War II in the allies of the USSR on the anti-Hitler coalition. Moreover, the law does not contradict the provisions of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union, the regulatory legal acts of the EAEU and the provisions of other international treaties.

A member of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, Crimean Senator Sergei Tsekov, in an interview with RT, evaluated the bill adopted by the State Duma on adjusting the date of military glory - the day of the end of World War II.

“I think this decision is based on historical facts. In fact, the war ended on September 3, and the transfer of this date is connected with this - this is explained only by this, and not by some political decision. In Russia, they treat the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War with great trepidation, and we are defending precisely objective data and information about these wars. I know that there was a long discussion about this among historians, and in the end I came to the conclusion that it was necessary to postpone it to September 3, ”the senator said.

In turn, the deputy director of the Institute of History and Politics of the Moscow State Pedagogical University Vladimir Shapovalov noted that the decision of the parliamentarians restores historical justice.

“It is this date in the Soviet Union that was officially recognized as the end of World War II. The fact that we are now returning this date is deeply symbolic, given the imminent celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Victory. The fact that the Duma specified the end date of the war is a completely normal process, since for us as descendants of the victorious heroes this is very important. This decision brings additional clarity to the history of World War II and will allow on the basis of this to create a clearer, more accurate, objective picture of the role of the Soviet Union both in the war in Europe and in the war in Asia, in which the USSR played a very important role, ” noticed the interlocutor of RT.

At the same time, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense Yuri Shvytkin explained that earlier the end date of the Second World War was designated as a memorial, and now in the new version of the law September 3 is defined as the Day of Military Glory.

“This is a different approach, he emphasizes the role of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazi Germany, militaristic Japan and their allies in World War II,” the parliamentarian said on Sputnik radio.
