Forest fires approach the Chernobyl nuclear power plant Ukraine 14 April 6:31

34 years ago, a forest fire continued from the beginning of this month in a closed area around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine where the worst nuclear accident in history occurred, and local disaster prevention authorities burned fires to radioactive waste storage etc. I'm trying to prevent it from happening.

A restricted area within a radius of 30 kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the former Soviet Ukraine, a forest fire broke out earlier this month and the fire fighting has continued for more than a week.

A Chernobyl nuclear power plant technician told NHK on the 13th that the fire was approaching about 2 kilometers from the power plant site.

One of the facilities where fire is closest is the storage of radioactive waste such as debris scattered in the nuclear accident 34 years ago, and the Ukrainian disaster prevention authorities deepened the waterless moat surrounding the storage. It means that we took measures to prevent the spread of fire.

In Chernobyl, a shelter was constructed to prevent radioactive materials from scattering from the accident site, and operation started last year, but technical problems such as how to take out the fuel left inside the reactor have not been solved, this time. There is concern that there will be a delay in the work towards the decommissioning due to the fire.
