At 8:02 p.m. Emmanuel Macron will speak live from the Élysée Palace on Monday, April 13, after the daily applause from the French for the nursing staff has passed. According to his entourage, the head of state "should mention an end date of confinement in May, at least after the bridge of 8-10 May".

Despite a slight thinning on the resuscitation front and a slight decrease in the number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in France, the president intends to show that the fight against the coronavirus is far from being mastered. A deadline "far enough to understand the effort that remains to be done, but close enough to sketch France from next", they say on the side of his relatives.

However, on Sunday, no date had yet been set. The Head of State continued to consult in all directions for his speech: doctors - including Professor Didier Raoult with whom he spoke almost every day according to a relative -, but also the presidents of the assemblies Gérard Larcher and Richard Ferrand , as well as several mayors from different regions, or the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. "On these heavy decisions, he has a real desire to unite and rally, by taking advice directly on the ground," added a member of his entourage.

Blunt French confidence

The Head of State is also expected on the terms of the deconfinement which seem much more complex to implement than those of confinement. Because it will not imply a return to normal in the immediate future. No question, for example, of immediately reopening shops and schools, but a reopening of schools only in September has not been decided, according to these sources.

During his intervention, which he wrote himself, Emmanuel Macron knows that he must defuse a growing distrust of his management of the crisis. According to an Ifop poll for the Journal du Dimanche, 38% of those questioned (-6 points) trust the government to fight the epidemic, a decrease of 6 points. A distrust fanned by the floating around the management of protective masks. Public opinion criticizes in particular the position of the executive against their generalization and its ability to import the promised masks.

He should not advance on this point or on other very concrete decisions, such as the method of testing or tracing patients, on which he generally leaves Prime Minister Édouard Philippe or the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, intervene.
