  • Hungary: Viktor Orban is empowered to rule by decree indefinitely

The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen , warned Hungary to open a procedure, in case the restrictions adopted to the coronavirus are "excessive", and recalled that these must be "temporary".

The measures adopted must be "proportionate, limited in time and democratically controlled," said Von der Leyen, in statements to the Sunday "Bild am Sonntag".

"I am willing to act, in case those restrictions exceed what is allowed," said the president of the EC, to add that in that case "they threaten measures for violation of the treaties."

Von de Leyen thus reacts to the laws promoted at the end of March by the Hungarian Prime Minister, the ultra-conservative Viktor Orban , which grant him extraordinary powers and for an unlimited time to combat the pandemic.

The EC observes the implementation of the measures "in all the Member States", but it especially follows the Hungarian case "due to the critical experiences" already lived in the past, points out von der Leyen.

Brussels had already expressed concern in early April over concerns that Orban would use the crisis to "undermine" the rule of law.

The extraordinary powers approved by the Hungarian Parliament, controlled by the Prime Minister's absolute majority, allow Orban to rule by decree.
