April 11, 2020 Pope Francis entered St. Peter's Basilica, where this evening, at the Altar of the Chair, he presides over the solemn Easter Vigil. The liturgy in which the Resurrection of Christ is announced is considered the most solemn of the year, but like all the others of this Holy Week it takes place without the participation of the faithful, due to the anti-contagion provisions of Coronavirus.

Its development has also been modified and somewhat streamlined. The rite of the blessing of fire takes place at the foot of the altar of confession. The initial procession proceeds from the Altar of Confession to that of the Chair passing from the side of the "Altare di San Giuseppe".

For the current health emergency, the preparation of the Easter candle is omitted, as well as the lighting of the candles to those present.

At the singing of the Gloria, the progressive lighting of the Basilica is held, until complete illumination. Finally, during the ceremony, baptisms do not take place, with the only renewal of baptismal promises.
