This new record jump (+1,973 dead), slightly higher than the previous day (+1,939), brings to 14,695 the total number of deaths recorded, according to Johns Hopkins University. The world's leading power now exceeds Spain (14,555 dead), but remains less bereaved so far than Italy (17,669).

7:17 a.m .: Extended confinement beyond April 15

France, which enters its 24th day on Thursday, is preparing for an extension of the confinement. Already extended once until April 15, confinement will continue beyond this date, warned the Elysee Wednesday evening, without specifying the duration of the new extension.

This will be one of the subjects of an address by Emmanuel Macron Monday evening to the French, to present his decisions concerning the fight against the epidemic during the coming weeks, according to the Presidency of the Republic.

7:10 am: Update on the situation in France

According to the latest assessment communicated by Jérôme Salomon, the Director General of Health, this Wednesday evening, 30,375 people are currently hospitalized for a Covid-19 infection in France, or 348 admissions in 24 hours. 7,148 severe cases require heavy intensive care. Since March 1, 7,632 deaths have been recorded in hospital, including 541 in the past 24 hours.

Jérôme Salomon also clarified that a technical problem had prevented Santé publique France from giving updated figures for nursing homes and medico-social establishments on Wednesday evening.
