  • Brett Crozier, the disgraced aircraft carrier captain who was inspired by Tom Cruise

Acting Secretary of the United States Navy Thomas Modly has resigned from office and has apologized for calling former aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt captain Brett Crozier "stupid" in a speech to the ship's crew.

President Donald Trump, who had originally supported Modly, backed down on Monday and said "I will get involved" in the controversy. Crozier had been removed from 'Roosevelt' command for leaking a letter calling on the military authorities to evacuate the ship , in which a rapidly expanding coronavirus outbreak had appeared. The crew of the aircraft carrier is 5,000 people .

In the speech, Modly did not hide his irritation at the fact that the crew of the 'Roosevelt' dismissed Crozier to applause , and hinted that the concern among sailors and airmen was little less than an act of breach of duty.

"Crew of the 'Roosevelt', you have no obligation to love your leaders, it is enough that you respect them. You have no obligation that you like your work, only to do it," he said. The already outgoing former secretary of the Navy - who had never been confirmed in office - went further: "That is your duty. Do not complain. Everyone is afraid of this thing," he said, referring to the coronavirus, before adding : "Let me tell you something: if you were in war combat and some hypersonic missiles were coming towards you, you would also be fucking nervous. But you would do your job ."
