Tuesday evening, a woman in her forties died strangled at her home in Saint-Quentin, in Aisne. Her husband was taken into police custody, we learned from concordant sources.

Around 9 pm, a 49-year-old man, "drunk", "strangled" his wife, told AFP a police source. The man was arrested and placed in police custody, according to the Saint-Quentin prosecution, in charge of the investigations.

At least 19 feminicides since the start of 2020

The firefighters intervened around 9:30 p.m. Despite the first aid gestures given to the victim, the latter was declared deceased on the spot by the SMUR doctor, said the departmental operational center for fire and rescue (CODIS) of the Aisne.

An investigation was opened by the Saint-Quentin public prosecutor's office and the investigations were entrusted to the police from the Laon police station.

The case brings to at least 19 the number of alleged femicides since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP count. In 2019, AFP identified at least 126 cases of women killed by their current or ex-partner, an average of one woman every three days.
