Independent Senator Bernie Sanders announced to his team on Wednesday that he was abandoning the race for the White House, according to a press release, offering the victory of the Democratic primary to Joe Biden who will face Donald Trump during the American presidential election in November. Bernie Sanders, 78, must address his supporters at 11.45 am (3:45 pm GMT), in a speech broadcast on the internet.
"Senator Bernie Sanders announced on a call with his entire team on Wednesday that he was suspending his campaign to become president," his campaign team said in a statement. "The campaign ends, the struggle continues," added the statement.
An official designation by the party
Former Vice President Joe Biden, 77, is now guaranteed to face Republican President Donald Trump on November 3. But he has yet to be officially nominated a candidate by the party at a convention, which was postponed until August because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Campaigning clearly on the left, Bernie Sanders thus ends his second attempt to win the Democratic nomination after a series of heavy defeats against the former right arm of Barack Obama, more moderate. The independent senator from Vermont lost the Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton in 2016.
