He is small, already fierce, and as he grows he will no doubt be deadly. Covid is a baby tiger less than a month old born in a private zoo in eastern Mexico, whose owners have decided to call it the virus that is currently shaking the planet.

Zoo officials say they chose the name as a symbol of hope because the virus, despite its lethality, is an opportunity for humanity to reflect.

“[His] birth is an incredible gift for our zoo. With what's happening right now, this tiger is a ray of hope, ”explains Kitzia Rodríguez, veterinarian of the family zoo, Bio Zoo, in Cordoba, east of Mexico City. Covid was born on March 15, in the middle of a pandemic, and is doing perfectly. Closer to the plush than the Bengal tiger, it does not yet stand on its feet and claims its bottle with all claws outside.

"A name full of hope"

According to his touching but determined roars, Covid promises to become a fearsome feline. "He was born very strong, quite tall, although no one at the zoo realized that his mother was carrying him," recalls the veterinarian. This one weighs 1.4 kg, slightly more than the average weight of a newborn tiger, says Doctor Rodríguez, owner of the Bio Zoo.

For him, his daughter's proposal to baptize the young feline in this way aimed to raise awareness of ecology, beyond the pandemic that paralyzes half of the world's population. "It is a name full of hope, of a virus which has come to teach us to take care of ourselves, which certainly does harm, but teaches us to also reflect" on the need to preserve the planet, estimates- he.
