07 April 2020 Highly paid analysts from mafia organizations are already working to identify the great profit opportunities resulting from the Covid emergency19.

This is the alarm issued by the Chief of Police and Director General of Public Security, Franco Gabrielli, in a confidential document sent to the 194 countries of the world that are part of Interpol and which contains an initial assessment of the impact of the pandemic on police duties and on the evolution of crime.

Gabrielli also focuses on the dangers of financial doping and the welfare provided by the mafias. He does it in a long interview with Interpol magazine, in which he explains what the emerging risks are.

"The police force, right from the start, is monitoring with great commitment the signs that could indicate a change in strategies by criminal organizations to prevent their actions", is the prefect's premise.

Criminal groups and supply chains
In particular, “immediate attention was paid to the economic sectors that have never stopped their operations, such as the agro-food chain, the sector for the supply of medicines and medical-sanitary materials, road transport funeral services, cleaning, sanitizing and waste disposal companies. In fact, these are sectors where a particularly high level of specialization is not required and criminal groups can easily manage to offer services at definitely competitive prices because the companies they control do not comply with the environmental, social security and safety regulations on the work".

The mafia insinuates itself among small and medium-sized enterprises
There is also the no less important question of the liquidity crisis of small and medium-sized enterprises, "which, as a result of the suspension of their business, may not be able to cope with their payments independently. Organized crime could, therefore, take advantage of the moment of difficulty to creep into the corporate structure by providing the necessary money or offering usurers loans. At the end of the emergency, therefore, the criminal associations could have polluted the economy, controlling previously un infiltrated companies ".

Families and workers
A social risk also for the social structure, warns Gabrielli: “Families in difficulty, undeclared and / or seasonal workers could represent a further catchment area both for the usurious activities of the underworld, and as a new low-level 'worker' cost".

The financial mafias of the dark web
Not only that, the prefect Gabrielli highlights among the emerging activities cybercrime, which “constitutes a sector that knows no downturns and attempts to identity theft and fraud continue to occur, sometimes also linked to the needs related to the current emergency situation, thus such as online solicitation and pedophilia cases ".

"If we record, therefore, a decrease in illicit" street "phenomena, the dark web highways have become, even more, privileged ways for the financial mafias, mainly linked to the trafficking of drugs, weapons and human beings. Organized crime 2.0 invests heavily in new technologies, demonstrating that it has organized itself in advance with great flexibility to take advantage of new profit opportunities illegally, "concludes Gabrielli.
