British singer Marianne Faithfull, an icon of the 1960s, was hospitalized after being tested positive for the new coronavirus, his public relations agency said on Saturday.

"Marianne Faithfull's manager (...) confirmed that Marianne was being treated for the Covid-19 in a London hospital," tweeted Republic Media, an agency specializing in the music industry.

"She is in a stable condition and responds well to the treatment. We wish her a full and speedy recovery," she added.

Avant-garde American artist Penny Arcade, friend of the 73-year-old British singer, wrote on her Facebook account that Marianne Faithfull had been in hospital on Tuesday after the onset of a cough, while 'she was in confinement.

"She overcame and survived so many things in her life - including being Marianne Faithfull - that being swept away by a virus would be such a tragedy," wrote the American, real name Susana Ventura.

Marianne Faithfull was one of the icons of the Sixties and was propelled to the front of the stage at only 17 years old thanks to the song "As Tears Go By", written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

Besides being a singer-songwriter, she has also been an actress on stage and in front of the cameras during a career spanning five decades. His drug addiction problems were notorious, as were his health problems.
