Trump: does not rule out tariffs on imported crude oil to protect US oil companies

US President Trump said at the White House conference on the 4th that if necessary, he would impose tariffs on imported crude oil to protect American oil companies. Trump said he "will take all necessary measures" and low oil prices have hurt a large number of jobs in the United States.

The "crude oil price war" between Saudi Arabia and Russia has caused international oil prices to plummet. Trump had previously stated that he would mediate the two countries' production cuts to stop the oil price from continuing to fall, while Saudi Arabia and Russia hope that the United States will also reduce production. Trump met with representatives of major US oil companies on the 3rd and did not propose a plan to reduce production. Afterwards, he told reporters that the market should determine the price of oil.

US crude oil production surpassed Saudi Arabia in 2018 and has become the world's number one oil producer. According to the forecast of the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) in January this year, US crude oil production in 2020 is expected to increase by 1.06 million barrels per day, reaching a record high of 13.3 million barrels per day.
