European Union decides to temporarily waive tariffs and value added tax on medical supplies and personal protective equipment

Xinhua News Agency, Brussels, April 3 (Reporter Wang Zichen) In order to combat the new crown epidemic, the European Commission decided on the 3rd to temporarily levy tariffs and value-added tax on medical materials and personal protective equipment imported from outside the EU. This will help reduce the price of masks, ventilators and other urgently needed materials entering the EU market.

The European Commission said that the effective date of this decision dates back to January 30, initially for a period of 6 months, and may be extended in the future.

According to EU rules, EU member states can apply to the European Commission for the exemption of duties and VAT on certain commodities, which can be implemented after approval by the European Commission.

On March 20, the European Commission invited all member states and the United Kingdom, which is still in the transition period of "Brexit", to submit to the European Commission requirements for exemption from customs duties and value-added tax on medical supplies and personal protective equipment. All these countries have submitted the above requirements and have been approved.
