  • Italy: New coronavirus infections and deaths stabilize in Italy

Italy plans for the postcoronavirus era but schools do not appear to reopen this school year. The Ministry of Education has prepared a draft, which will be analyzed in the next council of ministers , according to La Stampa , which is scheduled to return to activity in September.

As the calculations indicate that it would not be possible to return to schools or institutes before May 18, the students who are going to take the Selectivity test this year will have to take an oral exam remotely. Those who have to make up material would have reinforcement classes in September.

The provision, which has been christened "State exams and evaluation of the current school year", will be analyzed by the Government shortly to give it the green light.

Decrease in infections

Italy registered a decrease in the rate of coronavirus infections this Friday, which stood at 4%, despite the fact that the number of deaths increased by 766, bringing the total number of deaths to 14,681.

The data released by Civil Protection reinforced hopes that Italy has passed the pic or after being the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic last month.

The number of patients who have been declared fully recovered shot up 17.3% , with 19,758 cases registered.

The crisis in some of the worst-hit regions of Italy also appears to be gradually receding. The northern Lombardy region, where more than half of official deaths have been reported, had a slight increase in the number of patients who have been admitted to intensive care.

"The numbers are improving", acknowledged the adviser to the Health of Lombardy, Giulio Gallera. "Our hospitals are beginning to breathe," he assured the press.

Hard blow to the economy

However, the virus has put the health system on the verge of collapse and dealt a severe blow to the economy. The third economy in the European Union, which requires an exceptional continental plan to reactivate itself, hopes to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus.

Sudden disruption to tourism , one of the main sources of revenue, is estimated to cause a loss of 45% of annual hotel and restaurant revenue.

Italy, the first country in Europe to order the complete closure of economic activity on March 12, with the exception of pharmacies and supermarkets, had to extend the strict confinement until April 13.

The Italian authorities have warned that the country will begin to operate gradually and that swaths of the population should remain confined for more weeks.

The confederation of industrialists, Confindustria, calculates that the country's production will decrease 6% if the pandemic continues to strike in May . Each week of paralysis represents a reduction of 0.75% of the Gross Domestic Product, according to the entity.
