An airplane with medical equipment purchased by the Ministry of Health and, at least, by the autonomous communities of Castilla-La Mancha and Navarra, has been held for six days at the Ankara airport (Turkey) due to a customs problem, according to been able to know THE WORLD.

Several administrations bought hundreds of respirators for critical units - to strengthen their ICUs due to the expansion of the coronavirus - in China and expected their arrival last Saturday. However, the flight stopped at Ankara and was held there, apparently due to a bureaucratic customs problem, according to sources familiar with the problem.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was involved from the first moment and began to take steps to unblock the flight. Sources familiar with that negotiation explain that the unlocking could be imminent. Foreign is trying to get it to Madrid as a "diplomatic bag" and the plane could finally take off this weekend. However, everything depends on the Turkish authorities, who had not yet given their approval last night.

Among the material that should be transported to Spain are 150 respirators that the Castilla-La Mancha Community Board has acquired. For them he has already paid three million euros. In addition, there are several dozen respirators more purchased by the Government of Navarra , as well as more material ordered by Health.

Respirators would relieve ICU pressure in both regions, especially in Castilla-La Mancha, which has become the third most affected by the coronavirus, although it is the eighth in population.

As they explain from the regional government, this already paid item would serve to completely decongest the critical units of the region since in the Executive of Emiliano García-Page they calculate that they are very close to reaching the peak of infections and hospital admissions due to the Covid-19, which have started to drop. Castilla-La Mancha now has 355 critical respirators in operation to try to save the lives of as many patients who cannot breathe normally on their own due to the infection. This triples normal ICU activity in the region.

In recent days, the García-Page Executive has added 17 more respirators to its health network. Six have been supplied by the Ministry of Health; three have been purchased by the Board in Japan ; another six are rehabilitated old respirators and two have been donated by BBVA . With the 150 that should arrive from Turkey, the needs of the region for all of April would be covered, they explain from Toledo .
