Men and women may only take turns leaving their homes on different days of the week. This was decided by the government of Panama, which tightened its quarantine measures against the coronavirus epidemic.

From this Wednesday, and for a fortnight, men will be allowed to go out to stock up or go to the pharmacy, for two hours, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The other days are reserved for women, except Sundays when all outings are prohibited, regardless of gender.

Over 1,000 confirmed cases

"This quarantine is aimed absolutely at nothing other than saving lives," said security minister Juan Pino at a press conference. More than 2,000 people, he said, were arrested last weekend for breaking the rules of "total and mandatory" quarantine decreed on March 24.

The "simplest way" to halve the number of people on the street is "to assign certain traffic days to women and certain days to men," said the minister. Panama has 1,075 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 27 deaths.
